Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
