This Supernatural Story
The acclaimed director challenges his film-making abilities with this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely from the perspective of the phantom. As a family including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their fresh home, the filming device – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of aware of the ghostly being, and it seems defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, with a twist that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema
This Self-Referential Film
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He portrays an egotistical film star named Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to visit a birthday party on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by government spies to spy on the alleged criminal, Cage's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, evening, the Channel 4 network
This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective without requiring a sequel. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of disappearances has made the youth on edge. After Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a dungeon, he anticipates a terrible outcome. Yet the disconnected phone mounted nearby continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, and the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen could save him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
This Dramatic Portrait
In the struggle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic regarding the shamed TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor plays the greedy Jim, who states early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple set about monetising the people's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, however Chastain achieves to present the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, late night, on Film4
